Tailwheel Training

We provide tailwheel transition training in both, our Aeronca Chief and Aeronca Champ based on which you prefer. Check out the Fleet page for info about the airplanes.

What are the minimum requirements for completing a Tailwheel Endorsement?
As stated in the FAR's, “The flight training must include at least the following maneuvers and procedures: (i) Normal and crosswind takeoffs and landings; (ii) Wheel landings (unless the manufacturer has recommended against such landings); and (iii) Go-around procedures.”

How long does a Tailwheel Endorsement take?
This varies from student to student. Usually, you can expect somewhere between 7 to 15 hours of dual instruction, which most is spent in the traffic pattern doing takeoffs and landings. We typically see the students who fly more often do their tailwheel endorsement in fewer hours.

Why does a tailwheel endorsement take so long?
Flying a taildragger can be challenging because of the attitude of the airplane when sitting on the ground. Typically the visibility is much less than your average tricycle gear airplane and takes some time to get
used to. Another reason is because taildraggers are known to be unstable. Use of your rudders is more critical to maintain runway control and prevents the dreaded ground loop.
